Arthur Seligman | Partner

Arthur is the Head of the firm’s Trusts and Foundations Group. He has vast experience of the Bahamian legal system and government departments having commenced his legal career as an Assistant Crown Counsel at the Office of the Attorney General doing both chambers and court work in relation to a wide range of corporate, property and commercial matters.

Arthur attended University College Dublin in Ireland where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Honours degree in English, and Greek and Roman Civilisation before going on to study Law at the King's Inns in Dublin where he obtained a Degree of Barrister-at-Law (B.L.) in 1991. He was called to the Irish Bar in 1991 and to the Bahamian Bar in 1992.

Before returning to The Bahamas, Arthur did a year long pupillage at the 4 Stone Buildings chambers at Lincoln's Inn, London.

Prior to joining Lennox Paton, Arthur worked with two other law firms in Nassau. He has a local and international clientele consisting of both private individuals and financial and other institutions.

Arthur has written articles on Trust and Banking law and from 2002 to 2007 he was responsible for updating the section relating to the laws of The Bahamas for the Martindale Hubbell international law directory.

Arthur served as an elected member of The Bahamas Bar Council from 1997 to 2003 and currently serves on the Bahamas Financial Services Board committee on Trust legislation reform.

He has a working knowledge of French and is the Honorary Consul for Israel in The Bahamas.

The following is an example of some of the work Arthur has done:

  • Acted for overseas Vendor in the sale of a local bank and trust company.
  • Advised local bank on increase of share capital and obtained regulatory consents.
  • Advised in relation to insolvency legislation and obtained a Court Order overturning a Liquidator's rejection of a creditor's claim.
  • Advised creditor and filed proceedings to wind up a shipping company.
  • Advised local bank and trust company on forms of precedents for establishing a Foundation and Private Trust Company.
  • Advised Settlor of Trust in relation to cross border estate planning.
